DJ Starter Packages - The Essentials for Beginners

Whether you’ve decided to get into DJing or you’re shopping for someone who is interested, it’s important to know exactly what you need to get started. The basics are really simple:

Computer

The center of every DJ rig is the computer. While you can use a desktop computer, you will find that most DJs prefer laptops. When it comes to operating systems, you’ll be happy to know that most major DJ software is able to run on both Mac and PC platforms. There are plenty of fans of each, so what you decide to use will come down to preference. It’s important to pick a computer that meets the required specs of your chosen software.

DJ Controller

The next piece of gear you should focus on is the DJ controller. Technically, you can use DJ software with a mouse and keyboard, but a DJ controller is going to make using the software a whole lot easier and really give you that true DJ experience. There are great options from brands such as Pioneer, Numark, Denon and more suited for every budget, but it will ultimately come down to what your needs are.

DJ Software

When it comes to DJ software, there are several options available, but the big names in software right now are Serato, rekordbox, Virtual DJ, and Traktor. DJ software allows the user to control their music library and use features within the software to manipulate the music and create great mixes. Many beginner DJ controllers will come bundled with software to get you started.

Headphones

When mixing with a DJ controller, there are times you’ll need to listen to something before you bring it into your mix. You can do this with a controller’s Cue function, but the cue function won’t do you any good if you don’t have headphones to listen with. There are a few things to consider when purchasing a pair of DJ headphones. They obviously need to sound good, but you also want them to be durable and comfortable. Your headphones are going to be used frequently and will be on your head for long periods of time, so these features are crucial.

Monitors

In order to practice your skills and prep your mixes, you need to be able to hear what you’re playing. For this, you’ll want to grab a good pair of studio monitors. Perfect for your desk or practice space, these compact speakers provide just the right sound output for you to get a feel for your mixes. For performances, you’ll eventually need to upgrade to a PA system, but monitors are perfect for practice and prep work.

Microphones

If your plan is to eventually become a gigging mobile DJ, you’ll want to invest in a microphone. This is important for making announcements and hyping up the crowd.
