Networking with other professionals has always been an important activity for mobile DJs. With the current world situation, however, it’s become even more essential for DJs to join forces with their fellow entertainers. During a time when performing has been temporarily put on hold or restricted, collaborating allows us to still learn and grow our business even when events aren’t happening.
We’ve heard it a million times since last March – “You’re going to need to pivot!” And a lot of DJs are doing just that. They’re finding new and innovative ways to share their talents and unique skillsets with their clients. But pivoting isn’t the only thing that DJs need to be focused on right now. Stay-at-home orders and limitations on gatherings have filled our schedules with unprecedented amounts of free time (like it or not) which is a goldmine of networking potential.
If you’re anything like me, you probably enjoy working alongside another DJ almost as much as you enjoy doing your own event. Tagging along or being a roadie for someone else’s gig allows you to learn from others’ styles and see areas of improvement for your own DJing. The only problem? Everyone works at the same time! It’s seemingly impossible to find a weekend night where two busy DJs aren’t both working. Now, however, DJs can instantly connect with each other from the comfort of their living rooms and swap ideas and best practices. We can talk about our favorite song blends or the best way to transport gear. Some DJs have begun a regular music night where they discuss the best current songs and remixes that they’ve found while digging.
No matter how old you are or how long you’ve been a DJ, there’s probably something you can learn from someone else. For younger DJs like myself, connecting with more seasoned pros helps with music history knowledge and tips for refining my microphone skills. More experienced DJs need not discard the opportunity to collaborate with the newbies, who are often aware of current trends in music and the latest equipment. Everyone has a set of interests and passions that can benefit someone else. For some, it may be tech and for others, it may be speaking training. Regardless of the topic, everyone benefits when knowledge is shared.
Collaboration doesn’t have to be just networking and discussion. Some DJs are creating new content together, whether it be podcasts, YouTube videos, or promotional content. Have an idea for improving your local event market? Another DJ may be able to help bring that idea to life. Thanks to technology, we aren’t limited to our immediate neighborhood or city. Many of the country’s best DJs are easily accessible on social media and are looking to stay connected too. Imagine the things you could learn from a top DJ in another market! As events slowly begin to open up and restrictions ease, it’s likely that your busy days will be different than other DJs in your area. Reach out to them and see if you can lend a hand!
